Workshop: Trends in Legal/Hiring
With Michael D. Short, LawVision and Stephen (Steve) Nelson, The McCormick Group

Innovation Workshop

We’ll kick things off with a fireside chat between law firm leaders and business partners discussing innovation in their organizations. Innovation continues to be part of the conversation between law firms and their clients, and there seems to be a level of competition to see who can roll out the most impactful, innovative client solution. But what does that mean exactly? You’ll be sure to walk away with some practical takeaways that can be used both internally and externally.

Hear from our panel of experts on:

  • What is innovation to you?

  • How can clients and law firms establish innovation touching key business and process elements {pricing, LPM, business operations}?

  • Should firms build innovation teams and if so, how can that structure be successful in today’s law firm structure?

  • How can law firms and client legal departments leverage innovation to attract and retain talent?

Workshop: The Many Roles of Transparency in the Legal Services Delivery Model

We’ll set the stage with a brief exploration of the nature of transparency and both its virtues and challenges, presented by Kellogg School of Management Professor Richard Jolly. This will be followed by a short panel discussion covering various dimensions of how the legal industry has historically struggled to embrace it in many ways. Then it will be time for some brainstorming and solution-development in breakout groups, which will discuss key areas where communication and collaboration can yield great results, including:

  • How can clients and law firms establish meaningful transparency related to key business and process elements like budget, scope and progress?

  • How can clients and law firms leverage transparency on performance evaluation metrics and priorities to improve client satisfaction and value creation?

  • What can be done in both law firms and client legal departments to nurture a culture that embraces transparency both internally and externally?

The goal will be to generate some tangible, practical takeaways that can be used in our internal and external business relationships.

Workshop: Panel Discussion: Making the Change

During this facilitated panel discussion, we will have an opportunity to hear from, and discuss with, several leading firms on how they have successfully addressed three inter-related themes when ‘Making the Change’ within their firms:

  • Building the case for change: including a discussion on how to successfully articulate the benefits of better pricing and legal project management and how this impacts on profitability; how we can measure our contribution as pricing and LPM teams and delivering better outcomes for our firm; and, how we can successfully engage with the senior leadership of a firm to help provide support and sponsorship to pricing and LPM related initiatives

  • Implementing the change: including a discussion on how to successfully gain traction for any initiative within a firm and different potential approach such as ’starting small, and then scaling up’ or ’top-down directives’; a discussion of typical change management challenges and mitigating approaches when implementing these types of initiatives, and how we can best integrate the role of technology (and key lessons learnt in how do to this successfully)

  • Embedding the change: including a discussion of where we should focus our efforts for best impact (e.g., driving rate increases or managing write offs better); how we can successfully encourage end users (e.g., our fee earners/ partners) to ‘self-serve’ and approaches to do this.
